We take a look at how the experts wok their magic on beautiful facial features!

FACEON Magazine meets with New York based Make-up Artist, Glenna Franklin and Connecticut based Photographer, Paul D Tortora: “With our gorgeous model, Miss Rebecca Leigh West, our goal was to shoot a series of ‘head shots’ accentuating Rebecca’s beautiful facial structure and endearing eyes. Extreme make-up was a must!”

Glenna Franklin, tells us how it’s done:

1.Rebecca's skin was prepped with Embryolisse Hydrating Mattifying Emulsion.

2.Research Council for Make-up Artists, Professional 'Color Process' make-up (in KO1 to KO4) was applied to the face. This highlighted and concealed Rebecca’s skin to achieve a flawless, even skin tone.

3.I was then ready to apply Make up Forever High Definition blush (#14)to the apple of her cheeks.

4.I set her foundation and blush with Laura Mercier loose finishing powder.

5.Make up forever (Aqua cream in #1) was then applied to her entire eye lid - followed by a black, fine glitter.

6.Continuing on her eyes, I then applied Kat Von D eye shadow from her ‘Metal Orchestra’ Collection (using the colours Lucifer & Dagger) along with her ‘Love & Fury’ collection (using Odd Fellow).

7.I then applied Bobbi Brown black gel eyeliner, around her lash line, top & bottom.

8.Using Make up Forever, I lined the inner rim of the eye with a black Khohl pencil.

9.Shaping and filling the eyebrows is a must, I used MAC’s Lingering eyebrow pencil.

10.Your choice of lashes is up to you; however, for a more natural effect, I choose human hair false lashes and duo dark tone eyelash glue to fix.

11.From here, you must curl both the false and natural lashes together. For a seamless look, my tool of choice is the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler.

12.To complete the eyes, I applied Dior Show Mascara (in blackest black).

13.As an initial highlight to Rebecca’s cheekbones, I applied Make up Forever’s Sculpting Blush (#3).

14.This was followed by Lorac’s Perfectly Lit Powder, which was applied to the upper cheekbones, forehead and to the bridge of Rebecca’s nose.

15.And to finish, all was needed was Linda Cantello Lipgloss (in Nude) – voila!

The Photography process:

“We used a two light setup with a reflector. A 54” Elinchrom Octa was placed behind Rebecca for a crystal white background – and it’s also great for wrapping the light to accentuate her cheeks. This was angled, ever so slightly upwards, as to minimise any reflections from the camera.”

Photographer Rich Hinton tells us about his food related project that will leave you hungry for more!

The epitome of summer: oranges, lemons and, um… chocolate!? FACEON Magazine is privileged to delve into the ‘zestual’ minds of veteran artists, Rich Hinton and Karla Powell.

Rich describes his latest, tangy triumph:

“This is a personal project of mine. It’s all about designing make-up and hair that’s inspired by food. It may not be a ground-breaking concept, but what we’re doing is fresh and new. It’s been a yearlong project and my team I am proud that we’re heading to exhibition in March 2012. The whole thing is simply tangtastic.” *oh dear…

Photographer, Rich Hinton and Make-up/Hair Stylist, Karla Powell guide us through their inspirations behind the ‘Chocolate & Orange’ photo series (we also promise no more citrus jokes).

The team continue:

“Food is much more than just something we eat. It can make for a very effective art medium.

In addition to creating unusual effects and varied colours with make-up and hair designs, it allows our projects to truly stand out and to grab people’s attention and imagination.

Chocolate is one of the most popular and yummiest of food types. With a great choice of colours and textures, we felt we could literally explode with creativity when combining chocolate with citrus fruits.

We were delighted with this concept - the lush spectrum of browns and oranges all combined together as planned. The real oranges and orange peel in the hair and eyebrows allowed the make-up to pop! We hope you enjoy our latest series.”

Make-up guide: By Karla Powell.

Step 1: “I began by preparing the model’s skin with NARS Pore Refining Primer, which instantly refined her pores, giving reduced shine and it ‘mattified’ her skin ready for foundation.”

Step 2: “I wanted her skin and body to replicate the white of an orange peel. To achieve this, I buffed her face and body with Kryolan Ultra Foundation (in TV White 2) using a MAC 188 Fibre Brush.”

Step 3: “To contour her face, I applied Kryolan’s Cream Supracolor (in 508). I used my fingers on her cheeks, under her cheekbones, sides of her nose, temples and alongside her hairline. I used an Illamasqua Blending Brush (11) to enhance my model’s features.”

Step 4:“Using a small synthetic brush, I concealed, where necessary, with Kryolan Dermacolour Palette (in NR2). This evened out her skin tone.”

Step 5: “To set the base I used MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder to give a silky and invisible finish. I used a 187 Fibre Brush from MAC. To highlight my model’s face I used Illamasqua Powder Eye Shadow (in Vapour) and applied to her cheekbones, hairline and jaw-line using a MAC 168 Angled Contour Brush. This gave a highlighted, ‘tangerine’ effect to prominent areas susceptible to light.”

Step 6: “For the eyebrows, I used real orange peel. These were gently carved to the shape of the model’s natural eyebrow. My top tip would be to carve the brows the evening before the shoot and to soak them in water. To attach them, I brushed the peel with spirit gum until tacky. This enabled a natural adhesive that would allow the peel to fasten for the entire shoot.”

Step 7: “For the eyes, I opted for dark browns and bright oranges. I wanted her eyes to appear fierce and strong and yet to maintain our theme.

A team of professional creatives show you how to achieve the Geisha look.

FACEON Magazine explores Geisha Punk - an editorial shoot put together with emphasis on the make-up and hair styling talents of Joy Lowrie, Kimberley Dewar and Sophie Laidlaw. All with exemplary backgrounds in their respective professions (and both Joy and Kimberley due to take part in the make-up for Britain’s Next Top Model), they’ve teamed up to form a fairy-tale extravaganza...

The girls tell us:

“Having worked with the models during the Glasgow ‘Ideal Home Show’, featuring a stunning catwalk with numerous exhibited designers (one of which being the multi-talented Joey Bevan of ‘Pointed Brown Shoes’), we’ve styled the shoot using his fabulous designs. You may even recognise some pieces as they were featured in Britain’s Next Top Model 2010 and this year’s Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model!”.

“With each of the models from varying backgrounds all bringing a multitude of experience, we constructed a set within the studio using a neutral backdrop in order to give both the wardrobe and styling complete focal attention, together with the performing talents of each of the models”.

“The theme of the shoot, Geisha Punk, was achieved through the use of applied make-up and elaborate hair styling. Keeping very much in line with the traditional look of the Geisha we used pale skin tones and bold block colours. The hair styling is big and punky with the use of voluminous extensions”.

Traditional Geisha are Japanese performance artists, highly skilled in a wide variety of arts such as classical music and dance. However, Japanese Geisha have long been mistaken for prostitutes after World War II, when prostitutes would imitate the look of Geisha, even calling themselves "Geisha Girls”.

“With the shoot spanning over 10 hours with a variety of looks and wardrobe, we believe this to be one of the most exciting shoots performed this year – we only hope we’ve captured the attention and interest so deserved”.

To get the look...

The base is applied using Chanel Pro Lumiere foundation using the MAC Duo Fibre Brush (187). For full coverage, use a foundation brush to apply and blend well. Conceal under eye area using Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer with MAC Tapered Blending Brush (224). To give foundation staying power, set the base using Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Loose Powder (in Pale Yellow) with a MAC Large Powder Brush (150).

For the eyes, build and layer to achieve intense colour using a combination of MAC Pigments, as well as Illamasqua Liquid Metal (in Enrapture). The rich, intense cream-liquid creates a highly pigmented, metallic finish. The brushes used were MAC (252), (224), (219) and the Bobbi Brown Cream Blending Brush. To line and define the eyes, use the creamy Illamasqua Medium Pencil in a variety of darker shades, with the MAC Eye Kohl (in Smoulder).

Contour the face using MAC Powder Blush (in Harmony and Gingerly), blending into the cheekbones and along the sides of the nose. To further define the contouring, use MAC Pigment (in Pink Bronze) for the highlighting.

Coloured patterns on the face are applied using a stencil with the Illamasqua Cream Blush (in Rude and Seduce). Flashes of colour are then added using OCC Lip Tar (in Traffic).

The bold lip is achieved using a variety of lipsticks; go for OCC Lip Tar (in Complex), MAC Lipstick (in Saint Germain), MAC Lipstick (in Deep Attraction) and Sleek Makeup Lipstick (in Mulberry). Line the lip for a strong finish with the MAC Lip Pencil (in Currant) and Illamasqua Medium Pencil (in Sophie).

SKIN

“Keep skin nourished and your complexion flawless by introducing Elemis Melting Cleanser Gel into your beauty regime. This ultra-purifying cleanser is perfect for tired, dull or stressed skin caused by everyday pollution and even the extra central heating we use on a cold winters day! Luckily, this cleanser is equipped with skin protective Argan Oil, rice silk and purifying rosemary leaf combined with powerful anti-pollution Moringa peptides. These ingredients combined instantly rejuvenate and transform the skin without compromising its delicate microflora.

"With the skin now brimming with new life, why not treat it to something extra special? We love Cetuem Illuminating Mask (as used and recommended by Natasha Booth, our editor). This is a rich, powerful clay and botanical mask. Designed to effectively exfoliate, brighten and illuminate uneven skin tone, it encourages a brighter, firmer and more youthful complexion. Use once or twice a week applying a layer of the product using a mask brush, ensuring you avoid the eye area. Then leave to cook for 10-15 minutes! Once you have removed this product, thoroughly apply a skin toner and finish your regime with Cetuem SCR Gold serum and Crème De Lite.”

LIPS

“During the winter months and changing temperatures, our lips can often feel as though they have taken the full brunt of a storm." Chapped and sore, many of us wonder how to get that perfect pout back in our lives. This is where one of our favourite lip products comes to the rescue. Maybeline Shine Sensation Lip Gloss (Peach Sorbet) is perfect for on the go. This non sticky, high shine formula will add instant glamour to any look, without feeling heavy on our delicate lips.”

FACEON speaks to talented Make Up Artist about how she achieved this does eyed, wanting look.

FACEON Magazine speaks with artist, Katie Wilton on how to achieve this doe eyed, wanting look:

Eyes

1: “Use a natural base all over the eyes, both Iand FACEON recommend NYX Single Eyeshadow (in Vanilla Shimmer). Apply all over the eye and blend around the lashes.”

2: “Use a liquid eyeliner along the lash lines: Try some funky liners such as Urban Decay which in my opinion have one of the widest ranges of liquid shades in the industry. This slick and shiny range will not budge once dry and they give a gorgeous, full bodied colour.”

3: “To complete the doe eyed look apply false lashes to both the top and bottom. I particularly like Eylure Vivid False Eye Lashes – Necromancer.”

Lips

“The lips must remain pristine as they’ll ‘stand out like a sore thumb’ against the pale complexion.Another of my personal favourites would be YSL’s Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick (in 18).” And finally, just as an afterthought - If you use a light foundation, take a look at www.goshcosmetics.com – they have a wonderful range! Thanks for checking out our latest shoot, and remember girls… take what you want!”

She is the woman who never loses the faith.

“For you, she’s the girl you call for a quick coffee. Together, you’ll spend an afternoon and you’ll leave, forgetting all about her, until the next time. Friends.

But what you do not know – she’ll be waiting for that next time for what feels like an eternity. She’ll be sitting in the same chair, in the same café, longing that you’ll want to see her again. She only wants the chance to show that she deserves to be considered as something else. Something more.

She’s immaculate. She’s perfect. She’s waiting for the day that you will notice her. Time is but a blurry concept – she doesn’t care for how long it takes.

As life goes on around her, she remains frozen. Opposite to you. The other side of the table, listening to your stories. She understands you, your feelings and your innermost emotions.
She believes that one day; you will want to know who she is, for she has much to tell.”

Britain's position as an island has fostered the kind of independent and creative thinking that leads to original ideas, inventions, and discoveries and some of the most creative photography and make-up art the world has ever seen.

Britain has long since abandoned its ‘stiff upper lip’, transforming itself into a nation of open-minded, flexible, well educated ‘go-getters’.

Britain's position as an island has fostered the kind of independent and creative thinking that leads to original ideas, inventions, and discoveries and some of the most creative photography and make-up art the world has ever seen.
FACEON takes a proud and patriotic journey with Photographer, Ema Suvajac and Make-up Artist, Carrie Tibbs through their latest vision.Carrie tells us how exactly how the make-up was achieved:

“Before applying the make-up, start by cleansing and moisturising the face, ready for your base. Use the Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation and apply evenly over the face and neck for an oil-free, medium-to-full coverage. It has an extremely fine texture enriched with moisturizing agents so it leaves the skin feeling soft and radiant.

Eliminate any dark circles and blemishes using the MAC Select Moisturecover concealer - gently patted under the eyes and along the sides of the nose. You can layer it up for added coverage where needed; it’s great for any line-softening and skin-perfecting.

Prime the eyes using the Too Faced Shadow Insurance eye primer over the entire lid. This silicone-based eye shadow primer transforms any eye shadow into a perfectly blendable, colour-drenched and intensified version of itself - it then locks it down perfectly until you take it off. Say goodbye to those fading, creasing, melting, blurring oil-slicked and hard-to-blend eye shadow accidents!

Next, apply the MAC Eye Shadow (in Blanc Type) over the entire lid and blend well. Use the darker shade of MAC Eye Shadow (in Kid) on the crease of the lid for added depth. To really accentuate and brighten the eyes, apply a stroke of MAC Chromaline eyeliner (in Pure White) along the top and bottom of the lash line. The waterproof cream liner creates precise, long-lasting colour with a dense matte coverage. To refine the liner, use Make Up For Ever Pure Pigment (in 0 – White), layering the fine powder along the lash line and blend it to perfection.

For the eyebrows, use MAC Eye Shadow (in Brun) to fill in and create the perfect shape.

Then, for a super dramatic, wide-eyed look, apply a pair of NYX False Lashes along the top lashes only, followed by a touch of Maybelline Great Lash Mascara (in Blackest Black) to bind your natural lashes and the falsies together.

Contour the cheeks using MAC Powder Blush (in Ambering Rose), sweeping along the hollows of the cheeks and blending up and out towards the temples.

Finish the look with the perfect pout. Using the MAC Lip Pencil (in Cherry), take your time to contour and shape the lips and then completely fill them.

To transform the look for the second set, simply add a touch of MAC Eye Shadow (in Clarity) for a vibrant splash of colour, sweeping over the entire lid and then working more into the crease of the lid for deeper coverage. And there you go, God save the Queen and all that!”

We take a look at Cristina Carra Caso's and her teams project and how they created it!

FACEON presents a masterpiece by photographic artist Cristina Carra Caso. Her shoot is entitled ‘The Attic’ and Cristina and her team have created a reflection upon lost toys, childhood innocence, fantasy and playfulness.

Make-up Artist, Joy Lowrie takes us on an exclusive make-up journey using only cosmetics by the Sleek make-up range.

1.Start by preparing your skin with a primer and foundation. I used Sleek’s New Skin Revive (in sand) - a light to medium coverage, silicone-based, oil-free liquid foundation. The weightless formula creates a naked feel to the skin and provides a natural, flawless finish. Apply a small amount then blend with a sponge or use a professional brush.

2. Apply Sleek’s Luminous Pressed Powder using light strokes around the face. It’s an illuminating pressed powder infused with mica to help reflect the light and creating luminous skin that looks fresh. It provides a translucent finish to help minimise skin imperfections and contains SPF15 maximizing sun protection for ageless, timeless skin that simply glows. Apply using a large powder brush or the enclosed puff. It can be used alone or to help set your foundation.

3.The eye make-up was created to individual, personal taste. Try using the ‘Me, Myself & Eye’ palette to create your very own masterpiece. The look was achieved by dabbing a bulbous brush into our chosen colours and again, gently dab onto the skin - try different combinations of colour. The palette is a detailed mix of colour with brilliant bolds, matte and shimmer eye colours. By using your imagination you can create endless looks from smoky black - to glistening and gold. The ‘Me, Myself & Eye’ is a limited edition, online exclusive!

4. For the lips, we used two different shades to achieve the look. Apply the first colour and then a darker colour to the bow of lip and to the middle of the lower lip only. Sleek make-up has a plethora of products to play with. Try Pout Paint (in Minx) for first layer then (Rosette). Pout Paint is a new lip pigment that provides a blast of colour in one, purse sized tube! The intensely saturated formula provides outstanding colour and dries with a long lasting satin likefinish. To create your own personal shade, experiment by adding a touch of ‘Peek-a-bloo’ - a unique blue tone which adds depth and warmth to any lip colour, or, add a hint of ‘Cloud 9’ – a pure white.

Belle Starr – The Attic – The Stylist

Stylist, Rebecca McCosh, represents Armstrong’s Vintage Clothing Emporium – where the entire wardrobe was donated. Armstrong’s Vintage Emporium is a tardis like shop overflowing with antique uniforms, vintage handbags, hats and clothes from every decade dating back to the Victorian era. Established in 1840, Armstrong’s has metamorphosed into a cornucopia of vintage and retro delights. They’re located within the shadows of Edinburgh Castle on one of the oldest streets in Edinburgh. With historic tales of public hangings and bodysnatching, it puts you right in the mood for all things vintage! www.armstrongsvintage.co.uk

FACEON couldn’t resist the latest set by International Photographer, Jun Cao. There’s a strong resemblance to the make-up style of the Debbie Harryof Blondie.
Debbie Harry is well known for her daring make-up and during her career she became an icon of her era - dramatic and heavily lined eyes with her pale skin made her the master of make-up drama!

FACEON Editor, Natasha Booth guides you through the make-up and exactly how to achieve this trend-setting look:

1.Choose a foundation 2 shades lighter than your skin tone, blend in well around the neck to avoid any lines.

2.Line the upper eyelid with black eyeliner. Apply a very heavy layer and the line should become thicker toward the outer edge of the eye. Extend the upper line out beyond the corner of the eye, to form a cat's-eye shape. Line the bottom of the eye under the eyelashes with another, thick line.

3.With a dark charcoal eyeshadow apply a thick line in the crease of the eye. In the gap apply a different shade of your choice to create your own look. Either use plenty of mascara or apply false lashes (or both!).

4.Apply concealer to the lips to help secure the lipstick. Use a lipliner to define the lips and emphasise the hot red pout you are about to create. Use a red gloss of your choice. To make the lips appear fuller, line the lips outside of your natural lip line.

5.Dust over with a light pink blusher to add a little colour but not too much! Try different combinations of colours on the eyes.

It’s long lasting and makes colours brilliant. I think it adds a little dazzle & charm to your lips!”

Make up artist Gemma Sutton talks with us about how to achieve flawless skin and inject some ooh la la into your look!

Would you like to have flawless skin?

That’s a super silly question. Let’s face it – most women AND men would say “yes please!”. The reality is, that there’s nothing out there to guarantee perfect skin.
Make-up is a wonderful, diverse entity that cheats and tricks its way to conjure beautiful from beauty; perfect from imperfect.

A little white lie doesn’t tend to hurt, so here’s what make-up artist, Gemma Sutton has in her make-up kit.

“I find that skin primers can make all the difference. Not only do they help your make-up to last longer, they help to give a smoother appearance to the surface of the skin.
My personal favourite is No7 Colour Calming Primer. It’s multi-tasking and also helps to
cover redness to the skin.”

Pink Summer Lady, by Gemma Sutton.

“A Summer of sweet frosted colour swept across the cheeks and lips. Pull out the gentle pastels, give them a modern edge and welcome your inner girl.I found my inspiration from ballerinas and baby-dolls - all blushing and pretty! I personally think it’s time to re-think pinks and accentuate with a hard edge finish, lashings of mascara and strong eyeliner.

To achieve this look, try to think feminine and pretty (with a grown-up twist). The main focus should be on the eyes, so keep the rest of the face make-up to a minimal. A soft dusting of natural pastel pinks to the cheeks and lips will work wonderfully. Blending is the key to wearing pink in the correct way. For dazzling eyes avoid using pink eyeshadow too much higher than the crease line of the eyelid. For a bold look, blend a darker pink from the outer corner of the eyelid towards the middle. Add a white shade to the inner-corner of the eye to widen the eye shape. For a perfect finish, apply flirty false lashes!”
